  • 4 large eggs
  • ¾ cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time beating well after each addition.
  5. Stir in orange zest, orange juice, and vanilla extract.
  6. Add dry ingredients alternating with buttermilk, mixing until just combined.
  7. Divide batter between pans and bake 25-30 minutes until toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Cool cakes in pans 10 minutes then transfer to wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Beat butter for frosting until creamy.
  10. Add powdered sugar alternating with heavy cream and orange juice.
  11. Stir in vanilla extract and orange zest.
  12. Beat frosting until light and spreadable.
  13. Spread frosting between layers and over cake.
  14. Decorate as desired and let set 30 minutes before slicing.

  • For crisp tops, broil 2–3 minutes at the end
