Christmas Tree C2C Crochet Blanket (Free Baby Blanket Pattern)

Free pattern + printable PDFUS terms · Letter and A4Jump to the free pattern

The Baby size hanging over the back of a sofa. A computer-made preview of the finished blanket, not a photo of a real one: your blanket will differ with your yarn and tension.

This Christmas tree crochet blanket is worked in C2C, corner to corner: small boxes of 3 double crochet, one diagonal row at a time, following a chart. The tree has three tiers, a gold star sitting on its tip, red and gold ornaments and a brown trunk, on a cream background. The Baby size is 31 boxes wide and 37 boxes tall.

Below you get the full chart with a symbol in every box and every one of the 67 rows written out: how many boxes, whether the row starts and ends with an increase or a decrease, and the colors in the order you work them.

Gauge and swatch

Make a swatch
Work a small C2C square of 10 x 10 boxes in one color and measure it. Our box size (about 1 in) is an estimate. If your box is bigger, the blanket is bigger and needs more yarn.

Notes

US crochet terms: see the abbreviations above.
A box = ch 3 + 3 dc (a new box at the start of a row is made on a fresh ch 6 instead).
Row 1 is the box in the bottom right corner of the chart. Even rows go from the right edge toward the bottom edge; odd rows go from the bottom edge toward the right edge (later the left and top edges). Each row begins with the turn written in its start instruction: turn only once per row.
The chart lines are counted from the top edge and are not the same as the C2C rows: the red numbers on the chart show where each diagonal row begins.

Increase at the start: ch 6, turn, dc in the 4th ch from the hook and in the next 2 ch (a new first box). Decrease at the start: turn, sl st in each of the 3 dc of the box you just made, sl st into its ch-3 sp, ch 3, 3 dc in the same sp. Across the row: *sl st in the next ch-3 sp of the row below, ch 3, 3 dc in the same sp; repeat from * to the end. Increase at the end: make the last box as usual. Decrease at the end: sl st into the last ch-3 sp and stop, no box there.

The chart

Christmas tree C2C chart, 31 x 37 boxes, a symbol in every box and red numbers where each diagonal row begins
Drawn from our chart model: one square = one C2C box. Red numbers = C2C row numbers beside the box where that diagonal row begins (row 1 = bottom right corner). Bold lines every 5 boxes, counted from the bottom right corner. A computer drawing. Tap to enlarge: Open it full size

Finishing

After the last row (a single box in the top left corner), fasten off and weave in all the ends. A border is not part of this pattern: if you add one, it adds to the size and to the yarn. Wash and dry the blanket as the yarn label says before you gift it.

The same Christmas tree C2C chart in three colorways: green tree on cream, cream tree on red, sage tree on white
The same chart in other colors, to give you ideas: the pattern colors are the ones on the left.

Tips

Check the box count at the end of each row: every written row gives it.
Put a stitch marker in the first box of every row so you can find the start quickly.
If your boxes come out bigger than about 1 in, try a smaller hook before you start the blanket.

Common mistakes

Turning twice at the start of a row: the new first box ends up on the wrong side.
Forgetting to stop before the last box on a decrease side: the row gets 1 box too many.

Make it your own

Other colors: a cream tree on red, or a sage tree on white, work from the same chart.

Care

Follow the washing and drying instructions on the label of your yarn.

FAQ

What is C2C crochet?
C2C means corner to corner. You crochet small boxes of 3 double crochet, one diagonal row at a time, starting in one corner. Each box is one square of the chart, which makes C2C perfect for pictures like this Christmas tree.
How much yarn do I need for this Christmas tree blanket?
About 745 yd of worsted (#4) yarn in all for the Baby size, estimated: Cream 838 boxes (about 540 yd), Green 265 boxes (about 170 yd), Gold 28 boxes (about 20 yd), Brown 9 boxes (about 10 yd), Red 7 boxes (about 5 yd). Buy a little extra of each color.
How big is the finished blanket?
About 31 x 37 in (79 x 94 cm) with a box of about 1 in. Make a 10 x 10 box swatch to know your own box size.
How do I read the chart?
Start with the box in the bottom right corner (row 1). Each C2C row is one diagonal of the chart. The red numbers on the chart show where each row begins, and the written rows list the colors in the order you work them.

Baby safety

This blanket is for supervised use (stroller, play, cuddling, the couch). Do not leave it in a crib or bassinet with a sleeping baby: safe-sleep guidance says no loose blankets for babies under 12 months. Not a toy. Check that every end is woven in and that no strand or loop can catch a small finger.
