Our Easy Crochet Baby Blanket in the Stroller size, about 30 x 36 in (76 x 91 cm).

Quick answer: our Stroller size is about 30 x 35-36 in (75-76 x 89-91 cm) and our Large size about 36 x 43-46 in (91 x 110-116 cm), depending on the pattern (exact sizes in the chart below). Yarn: 720-920 yd for Stroller, 1050-1390 yd for Large.

Below: the 6 sizes of the Easy Crochet Baby Blanket, the Christmas Crochet Baby Blanket and the Waffle Stitch Baby Blanket, with yarn, hook, stitch counts and yardage, and a yards-per-square-foot number to work out the yarn for any size. Pattern links at the end.

Safe sleep: the American Academy of Pediatrics says no loose blankets in a sleeping baby's crib or bassinet before 12 months, so our biggest size is called Large, not Crib.

Yardage and sizes are estimates from our calculated patterns, which have not been crocheted and swatched by a person.

Gauge and swatch

Make a swatch first
Our sizes use the suggested gauge of each pattern: moss stitch 15 sts and 16 rows; hdc 8 sts and 6 rows; waffle stitch 14 sts and 7-8 rows = 4 in (10 cm). Crochet a swatch of about 6 x 6 in in your stitch, measure the 4 in in the center and compare. More stitches per 4 in than the pattern: your blanket will be narrower than the chart. Fewer stitches: wider. Example: the Stroller size of the Easy Crochet Baby Blanket is about 30 in wide at 15 sts = 4 in.

Notes

US crochet terms: see the abbreviations above.
Every size includes the single crochet border, which adds about 1/4 in on each side.
Yardage includes a 20 % margin and is rounded up to the next 10 yd, as in each pattern.
Each size uses the suggested gauge of its pattern (see Gauge). A different gauge gives a different size.
Waffle Stitch Baby Blanket: our sizes use 7 rows = 4 in. With 8 rows = 4 in the blanket is shorter (Stroller about 31 in long).
Square feet = width x length in inches, divided by 144.
Yards per sq ft = the yards of yarn for 1 square foot of finished blanket, border included.

Moss stitch (sc and ch-1 sp), worsted weight (#4)About 107 yd per sq ft (Stroller 108, Large 107). From the Easy Crochet Baby Blanket.
Hdc (half double crochet), super bulky weight (#6)About 98 yd per sq ft (Stroller 98, Large 97). From the Christmas Crochet Baby Blanket.
Waffle stitch (dc and fpdc), worsted weight (#4)About 126 yd per sq ft (Stroller 126, Large 126). From the Waffle Stitch Baby Blanket.
Why the numbers differPost stitches use more yarn: in our model a fpdc takes about 5 in of yarn and a dc about 3.5 in, so waffle stitch needs the most yarn for the same size. The hdc number is for super bulky weight (#6) yarn: do not use it for worsted yarn.

How to estimate the yarn for another size

Use the yards per square foot of your stitch. It is an estimate: the closer your size is to ours, the closer it gets.

1. Pick your sizeWrite down the finished width and length you want, in inches, border included.
2. Find the areaWidth x length, divided by 144, gives square feet. Example: 30 x 36 in = 1080 square inches, divided by 144 = 7.5 sq ft.
3. MultiplySquare feet x the yards per sq ft of your stitch. Example in moss stitch: 7.5 x 107 = 802.5 yd, rounded up to the next 10: about 810 yd, the yardage of the Stroller size in the Easy Crochet Baby Blanket.
4. Count the skeinsDivide by the yards on your yarn label and round up. Example: 810 yd with 200-yd skeins: 810 / 200 = 4.05, so buy 5 skeins. Use the yarn weight of the stitch you picked: the numbers above only work with that weight.

Finishing

Each of our blankets ends with one round of single crochet border, about 1/4 in on each side, and the chart includes it. Measure your blanket after the border, laid flat on a table, and compare with the chart. Wash and dry it as the yarn label says.

Tips

Buy all the yarn for a blanket at once, from the same dye lot if the label shows one.
Want it wider or longer? Add stitches in the multiple your pattern gives, or add rows, then redo the yardage with the yards per square foot.
Start with the Stroller size if you want the shortest project: it is the smallest size in each of our patterns and needs the least yarn.

Common mistakes

Using the super bulky hdc number for worsted yarn: the yardage would be far off.
Skipping the swatch: a different gauge changes the size and the yarn.
Measuring before the border: our sizes include it.

How much yarn do I need for a baby blanket?
In our patterns, 720-920 yd for a Stroller size and 1050-1390 yd for a Large size, all colors together, estimated with a 20 % margin. Divide by the yards on your yarn label to get the number of skeins.
How many yards of yarn per square foot for a crochet blanket?

What size is a crochet stroller blanket?
Our Stroller size is about 30 x 35-36 in (75-76 x 89-91 cm), border included.
Can I make a crib size crochet blanket?
Not for sleep: the AAP advises no loose blankets in a crib before 12 months. Our Large size, about 36 x 43-46 in (91 x 110-116 cm), is for the play mat or a toddler's lap. See Baby safety below.
Does the border change the size?
Yes, a little: one round of sc adds about 1/4 in on each side. Our sizes include it.
